The background to these events is the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Calcutta on August 9.

The body of the 31-year-old victim was discovered half-naked in the hospital's seminar room on August 9.

The autopsy revealed that she had been sexually abused and then strangled and suffocated.

The accused, Sanjoy Roy, was arrested the day after the incident for the alleged assault and killing of Ms. Roy.
