Free child seat inspection through Broome County's Traffic Safety Program

JOHNSON CITY (WBNG) — The Broome County Traffic Safety Program is hosting a free child seat inspection event at the Johnson City Fire Department on Aug. 30.

Checks will be conducted on a first come, first served basis, whatever the weather, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., 320 Harry L Dr.

Car accidents are the leading cause of death among children between the ages of one and thirteen. When used correctly, child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by up to 71%.

In Broome County, only 12% of child safety seats inspected by certified child safety technicians are used properly.

Loose installation, harness straps that are not tight enough, incorrect placement of the chest strap, use of an expired seat, unknown seating history, or a seat that is unsuitable for the child due to age, weight, or size are all examples of improper use of a child seat.

To ensure the safety of children, safety checks will be conducted by certified child safety technicians and free educational materials and instructions on the proper use of child seats will be provided at the event.

No appointment is necessary. Participants should bring the car seat, child, vehicle, and car and seat manuals if possible.
