Relatives claim accused in Badlapur sexual assault case was killed in clash, demand investigation

Thane: The family members of Akshay Shinde, accused in the Badlapur sexual assault case who was shot dead by police, termed the incident an “encounter” and demanded an investigation into his killing.

Shinde was accused of sexually abusing two minor girls in a school in Badlapur town in Thane district of Maharashtra.

Shinde, a contract cleaner at the school in Badlapur, was arrested on August 17, five days after he allegedly sexually assaulted the two girls in the school toilet.

He was killed near Mumbra Bypass in Thane on Monday night when he allegedly snatched a policeman's gun while he was being driven over in a police vehicle during investigation into a case filed against him on the complaint of his ex-wife, an official said.

After firing at an API and injuring him, another officer of the police escort team fired at him and doctors at Kalwa Hospital declared him dead, the official said.

However, his father Anna Shinde demanded an investigation into his son's killing.

Speaking to reporters outside the hospital on Monday, Akshay Shinde's mother and uncle alleged that it was a conspiracy by the police and school administration in Badlapur.

They claimed that Akshay Shinde had told his relatives that he was beaten up by the police in custody and had also sent a receipt demanding money.

His mother and uncle doubted the police version and claimed that he could not have snatched the gun from a police officer.

He was not depressed, they added.

“The police killed our child. The school administration must also be investigated. The police made him write something, but we don't know what it is,” the relatives continued.

“My son was afraid to set off firecrackers and cross the road. How can he shoot at policemen?” asked Akshay Shinde's mother.
