University of Wisconsin Legal Services

Legal aid offices at the UW are free to UW students and may be free to others in the community as well. Non-UW resources listed on this page may not offer free services. Immigration attorneys can represent clients in any state in the U.S., and ISS provides contact information for those offices that request to be listed as a resource. UW does not endorse or recommend non-UW law firms or attorneys.

Clinic for Legal Advice for Families and Children

Advocacy Clinic Website

Services include: comprehensive legal representation in civil, non-fee-based cases for individuals whose income is 200% of the federal poverty level or less. Potential clients include, but are not limited to, victims of domestic violence, intimate partner violence, stalking, and sexual assault. Student attorneys may handle a wide variety of cases under the supervision of a licensed attorney/faculty director. The types of cases students handle in the Family and Child Legal Advocacy Clinic include, but are not limited to: divorce, child custody, child support, adoptions, guardianships, and the appointment of a guardian ad litem in juvenile and family law cases. Law students may also represent children or their parents in cases of child abuse and neglect, termination of parental rights, and children requiring supervisory measures.
