Passenger lied to protect drunk friend

Passenger lied to protect drunk friend

By Karin Hendrich

Two very drunk women got into the car one evening after a party… But instead of going home, they ended up on the tram tracks in Dörpfeldstrasse (Adlershof). Now the trial.

The fire brigade, which arrived quickly because it happened to be nearby, pulled Gabi S. (64, name changed) over from behind the wheel. But she hadn't actually been driving, she was lying to her friend. This brought her, who had previously had no criminal record, to the district court for attempted obstruction of justice.

“Yes, we had drunk a lot,” she recalled the evening of March 3, 2024. However, her friend Rita B. (65, name changed) did not stop her from starting her Mazda. “It was a big mistake,” she admitted remorsefully as a witness.

Dörpfeldstrasse was pitch black when the car suddenly stopped on the tram tracks. “I was so shocked that I dropped my cell phone.” I got out to look for it. “And Gabi? She got into the driver's seat to help look.” A police witness (36): “But she told me she was driving.”

Maybe because she felt a little fitter than Rita? Rita had a lot of trouble standing and vomited several times…

A fire officer (30): “Nevertheless, the ladies were in a good mood, joking… Asked if we could drive them to the car dealership.” He and his colleagues had great difficulty getting the Mazda free.

Friends had to hand over rags

The friends had to hand over their passports along with the car keys. And they had to go to the prisoner collection point. The defendants: “We were allowed to go home around 3. This time by public transport.” “It would have been smarter beforehand,” said the judge. Both of them quickly calculated that they had 2 per mille in their blood.

He dropped the case in return for a 600 euro fine to a charitable organization. And gave her her driver's license back after six and a half months: “You can drive again. But without alcohol.”

Her friend Rita had already received a fine of 1,000 euros and a nine-month driving ban in her case.
