RCMP confirms tragic end to search for missing boy in Shamattawa, Manitoba – SteinbachOnline.com

The search for six-year-old Johnson Redhead has come to a heartbreaking end.

“It is with great sadness that we share the following information regarding the search for Johnson Redhead,” the Manitoba RCMP said in a news release late Sunday night. The RCMP said the boy's body was found around 7:45 p.m. in a swampy area, about 3.5 kilometres from the school where he was last seen.

Johnson had been missing since Wednesday afternoon in Shamattawa, Manitoba, sparking a large-scale search involving community members, Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers and multiple search and rescue teams from across the province.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Shamattawa first received a report of the missing boy at 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday after he attended his school's breakfast program but did not return to class. From that moment on, the search intensified and resources such as drones, police service dogs and a helicopter were deployed.

Responders included teams from Manto Sipi Cree Nation, Pimicikamak Cree Nation, Tataskweyak Cree Nation and Winnipeg Search and Rescue.

“The intensity of this search has not let up since the report was received until today,” said Sergeant Mark Svaren, commander of the Shamattawa RCMP detachment, in an earlier statement.

The RCMP extended its condolences to Johnson's family and all those affected by this devastating loss.

Shamattawa is located about 745 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg.
