Supreme Court verdict on child pornography will have long-term, global impact on society, says plaintiff – ThePrint – PTIFeed

New Delhi, Sep 23 (PTI) – The Supreme Court's verdict making viewing and downloading child pornography an offence under the POCSO Act will have long-term and global implications for society, crime and child rights, a petitioner said.

Bhuwan Ribhu, complainant and founder of Just Rights for Children Alliance, said India has once again led the way globally by creating the framework for the prevention and protection of children from this transnational and organised crime.

In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court on Monday held that viewing and downloading child pornography is an offence under the POCSO Act and the Information Technology Act.

The Supreme Court suggested to Parliament that the term “child pornography” should be amended to mean “sexually abusive and exploitative child abuse material” and asked the courts not to use the term “child pornography”.

“This ruling will have long-term and global implications for society, crime and children's rights and will go down in history. When a person searches for material that exploits and abuses children and downloads it, they are creating a demand for the rape of our children,” he said.

Ribhu said this verdict also breaks the conventional terminology of “child pornography” which is seen as adult entertainment and shifts the narrative towards “materials that exploit and abuse children” which is a crime. PTI UZM NB NB
