You've probably already downloaded watchOS 11 to your Apple Watch. No? Then I'll give you a good reason why.

With watchOS 11, the Live Activities feature Move in On the smart watch. Together with the improved smart stack, the Apple Watch becomes even more practical for everyday use.

In addition to smartphones, cameras and PC handhelds, our author has developed a penchant for wearables. It goes without saying that he takes a closer look at the manufacturer's software as well as new hardware. Patrick is always on the lookout for a special feature that offers him added value in everyday life.

watchOS 11: How Live Activities work

The Live Activities feature is already available on the iPhoneThis means that functions such as the timer are projected onto the lock screen. The best part: you don't have to unlock or wake up your iPhone (with the always-on display) to get the latest information.

On the Apple Watch it works a little differently: If you scroll up with the crown or the display, you will reach the so-called Smart Stacks, which were added last year with watchOS 10. This view shows your app widgets.

What's new in watchOS 11 and Live Activities: The currently most important app is now displayed first as a widget. If you have set a timer, for example, the corresponding widget is placed prominently at the top. Live activities can also be mirrored from the iPhone to the Apple Watch, even if the respective app is not installed on the watch.

As is usual with interactive widgets, you can, for example, stop the timer with a tap of your finger without opening the app on your smartwatch.

Smart stacks become extremely practical with watchOS 11

For me, the idea of live activities in combination with the new smart stacks works much better on the Apple Watch than on the iPhone.

In the background, watchOS 11 presents the most important current information on a silver platter as so-called “widget suggestions” regardless of live activities:

  • If you change your location, the smartwatch will first show you current weather information for the new location.
  • When you get home, you will find the Apple Home app at the top of the smart stack to communicate with smart home devices.
  • Do you need a reminder or calendar entry? Scroll up and you'll find the reminder there.
  • After exercise, you can quickly and easily access your training data via the smart stacks.
  • Information about your sleep will also be presented to you on the watch the next morning (assuming you wear the watch on your wrist while sleeping).

watchOS 11: If rain is forecast for your region, the weather widget will appear at the top of the smart stack.

That's how it was before: In watchOS 10, you had to adjust the smart stack yourself to put your favorites at the top. Of course, you can still do that if you hold down your finger on a widget.

In practice, however, the new feature works like a charm and I can always rely on the watch to provide me with the most important information. So far, I have not felt the need to adjust the view.

As soon as an Android smartwatch or another watch adorns my wrist again, the missing function will definitely leave a big gap. In addition to the live activities, the new update offers many other functions such as the Vital app, the training loads or the new photo watch face:

Do you have a completely different opinion about the two new features? You can deactivate both in just a few steps in the Apple Watch settings.

  1. Press the crown on the side of the Apple Watch.
  2. Tap the settings icon.
  3. Select “Smart Stack”.
  4. Tap Live Activity or Widget Suggestions to turn off the option.

Alternatively, you can use the Live Activities context menu to allow only certain apps to use the function.
