Warnock “very concerned” about Georgia Election Commission's decision to require manual ballot counting

Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) expressed concerns about the Georgia State Election Board's decision on Friday that requires Georgia ballots to be counted by hand by poll workers on election night in addition to the normal machine count.

Speaking of Inside with Jen Psaki On Sunday, Warnock said he was “very concerned” about the ruling, citing former President Donald Trump's efforts to “find” votes in Georgia in 2020.

“I'm very concerned, Jen. We should all remember that famous call when a guy from Florida called Georgia and said he needed 11,780 votes. He didn't get them. And apparently these members of the state election board, who he calls pit bulls, are doing his bidding and trying to create a scenario where they can declare by decree who the winner of Georgia is. … That's how voter suppression happens, votes are subverted a little here, a little there,” he said.

The Georgia senator then claimed that these efforts by the Electoral College were proof that Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democrats are “winning” in Georgia.

“Georgia voters should take note: The fact that they are doing this means they know we are winning. They know that Kamala Harris has the upper hand and that this attempt to upend democracy is not going to stand,” Warnock said.

The Republican-led Electoral College voted 3-2 to hand-count all ballots in the Peach State, a move Trump allies have celebrated because they say the changes will help allay the former president's concerns about voter fraud that he raised four years ago in connection with President Joe Biden's narrow victory in the state.

The decision also sparked criticism from election officials and democracy activists who fear it will lead to delays, errors and higher costs for the state.

In August, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger called the proposal “misguided” and accused the election board members of being “unelected bureaucrats who have never conducted an election and appear to reject the advice of everyone who has.”

The latest survey average of RealClearPolitics shows a close race in Georgia, with Trump leading Harris by 1.7 percentage points, 48% to 46.3%.
