Police demand child safety in vehicles | News, Sports, Jobs

For the Williamsport Bureau of Police, the safety of the youngest members of our community is our top priority.

In the United States, traffic accidents are the leading cause of death among children.

With many families on the road this season, we want to make sure all children are properly buckled in.

Here are some important tips on child seat belt and car seat safety:

Rear-facing seats: Toddlers should ride in a rear-facing car seat until they are at least 2 years old or until they reach the maximum weight limit for the seat.

Forward-facing seats: Once the child has outgrown the rear-facing seat, switch to a forward-facing car seat with a harness. Keep the child in this seat until he or she reaches the weight or height limit.

Booster seats: Children should use booster seats until they are at least 8 years old. However, regardless of age, all children under 145 cm tall should use a booster seat. Seat belts: When children have outgrown their booster seat, please ensure that children are properly buckled in, with the lap belt low over the hips and the shoulder belt over the chest.

Rear seats: Also, children under 13 should sit in the back seat, away from front airbags. Check your installation: And always make sure child seats are installed correctly! If you want to have your child seat checked to make sure it is installed correctly, you can find a local installation station.
