Chappell Roan reveals why she is not supporting any presidential candidate

Chappell Roan said she does not feel pressured to support Vice President Kamala Harris or anyone else in this year's presidential election because “there are problems on both sides,” she said in an interview with The Guardian published Friday.

“I have so many issues with our government in every way,” the singer said. “There are so many things I want to change. That's why I don't feel pressured to support anyone. There are issues on both sides. I encourage people to use their critical thinking skills, use their voice – vote small, vote for what's happening in your city.”

In June, during her performance at the Governors Ball music festival in New York City, she told the audience that she had turned down an invitation to perform at a White House Pride event, saying, “We want freedom, justice and independence for all. If you do that, I'll come.”

Earlier this month, Roan spoke in more detail about why she declined the invitation in an interview with Rolling Stone, saying it was because of the US government's support of Israel in the Gaza war. She also said she considered going to the White House and reading poems by Palestinian women in protest, but decided against it after speaking with her publicist.

“I had selected some poems by Palestinian women,” Roan said. “I tried to do it as tastefully as possible, because I just wanted to scream. I had to find something that was tasteful, to the point, meaningful, and not about me and my feelings.”

However, she said she is not a fan of former President Donald Trump either, telling the newspaper that it is “not as black and white as hating one and liking the other” after her decision not to go to the White House was misconstrued by some fans as support for Trump.

“No matter how you say it, people are still going to be mad for some damn reason,” she added. “I'm not going to the White House because I'm not going to make a fool of myself for Pride. And thank God I didn't go because they just made a big statement about trans kids a few weeks ago.”
