Dina Titus announces grant to improve safety on Nevada college campuses

Congresswoman Dina Titus announced that the Nevada System of Higher Education will receive a $519,376 federal grant to address threats like the mass shooting at UNLV in December 2023.

Three professors were killed and one seriously injured.

“December 26, 2023 was the most tragic day in UNLV history. We still mourn the professors who lost their lives,” Titus said.

Congresswoman Titus said, “This grant will help prevent such tragedies in the future by better identifying threats of violence through the establishment of threat assessment teams; empowering students, university staff, and the public to recognize potential threats; and implementing plans to protect students, faculty, university staff, and visitors to our campuses.”

The grant was awarded by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to the Nevada System of Higher Education Threat Prevention, Safety and Awareness Initiative.

It was among 35 grants totaling $18 million awarded in 2024 under the Department's Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention (TVTP) grant program.

Congresswoman Titus, who previously served on the House Homeland Security Committee, has been a consistent advocate for Department of Homeland Security funding for counterterrorism and other security-enhancing programs.
