Chiefs vs. Falcons final score prediction for Sunday Night Football in Week 3 of the NFL

Chiefs vs. Falcons final score prediction for Sunday Night Football in Week 3 of the NFL

The NFL's Week 3 edition of Sunday Night Football features a rare showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Atlanta Falcons.

The Chiefs are on pace to become the first team to win the Super Bowl three years in a row and have begun their 2024 season with a 2-0 record. The Falcons, on the other hand, started the season trailing 0-2 but pulled off one of the most improbable comebacks in recent history to beat the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night. Now tied at 1-1, the Falcons are ready to see how they stack up against the NFL's best.

The last time these two teams played against each other was on December 27, 2020, when the Chiefs narrowly defeated the Falcons by a final score of 17-14.

Let's take a look at the latest odds for Sunday night and then I will try to predict the exact final result of the game.

In total

We've seen some significant line movement in this game throughout the week. On Sunday night, the Chiefs opened at 5.5 points in Atlanta. After the Falcons played impressively in their Monday night win over the Eagles, the game opened one point down at Chiefs -4.5. Since Tuesday morning, the line has continued to shrink, moving another 1.5 points to Chiefs -3, a total move of 2.5 points since last Sunday's opening line.

Despite all the fluctuations in the point distribution, the total score remained stable at 46.5.

In this week's edition of Road to 272 Bets, I broke down why I bet on the Chiefs when the spread was -4.5, and now that it's down to -3 on FanDuel, I like the Chiefs even more:

The Falcons pulled off an improbable win on Monday night, but now they have to face Patrick Mahomes on Sunday Night Football after a short week, which could be a nightmare matchup for Atlanta.

The Falcons' biggest weakness on defense is their lack of depth in the secondary and if anyone can exploit that, it's Mahomes with his abundance of weapons. Atlanta's lack of pass rush will also allow the three-time Super Bowl winner to retreat in the pocket and pick the Falcons apart.

The Falcons' path to victory is to run the ball early and often and keep Mahomes off the field, but Kansas City still has the right side at -3 in this game.

But what does it look like overall? The Falcons are still a borderline top-10 team in the league despite a subpar pass rush and issues with depth in the secondary. Offensively, Atlanta will likely rely on the running game to keep Mahomes off the field. If both teams run the ball, the clock will keep ticking, leaving less time to score points.

I think the Chiefs win and cover, but I predict the total score for the game to stay UNDER the set mark of 46.5.

Final Score Prediction: Chiefs 27, Falcons 16
