Man convicted of 2021 Waikiki stabbing that left visitors dead

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Hawaii Supreme Court on Friday overturned the guilty verdict and life sentence imposed on Oscar Cardona.

He was convicted three years ago of murdering a 19-year-old tourist in Waikiki.

Cardona claimed self-defense but was convicted in 2022.

But the state Supreme Court overturned the verdict on Friday, arguing that it was prosecutorial misconduct.

The case will now be sent to district court and prosecutors could retry it.

Cardona was held at Saguaro Prison in Arizona.

He is now to be returned to Hawaii as a pretrial detainee.
