2 famous athletes killed in gruesome traffic accident: “They were best friends”

Chicago: Families are in mourning after two athletes were involved in a fatal crash on Interstate 80 between La Grange Road and Harlem Avenue in Tinley Park.

How did the accident happen?

The two best friends, two athletes, namely 20-year-old Tyler Koscinski and 19-year-old Mason Santiago, were on their way home from college when the tragedy occurred.

“They were best friends… They were total goofballs together. They had fun together, dancing and competing against each other,” Koscinski's mother said.

Police told NBC that the crash occurred when the athlete's Dodge Journey SUV and a semi-truck fatally collided, but no further details about the incident were released.

They added that the SUV was traveling west when the tragic accident occurred that day. The two men killed had been friends since elementary school, their families said.

What did the athletes’ families say?

According to an ABC report, Koscinski's mother Kelly said her son was the bright spot in her family.

“He’s a phenomenal brother, athlete and just a crazy, funny kid who loved everyone,” Kelly said.

Koscinski's father said that his son dreamed of becoming a physical education teacher or coach, but did not live long enough to realize that dream.

Santiago's family said their son was passionate and loved everyone.

Previously, marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum died in a traffic accident on the Eldoret-Kaptagat road.

Kiptum and his Rwandan coach Gervais Hakizimana died in a tragic road accident on Sunday, February 11.

Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge said the 24-year-old Kenyan athlete, who was driving a Toyota Premio, and his coach died at the scene of the accident.

The police chief said a third inmate survived with serious injuries
