play

Scott Satterfield finally earned a Big 12/Power Four victory at Nippert Stadium after the Cincinnati Bearcats got off to an early start and defeated the Houston Cougars 34-0.

It was UC's first shutout against an opponent since November 3, 2018, when the Bearcats defeated Navy 42-0, also at Nippert Stadium. The Bearcats beat the Cougars 362-233. In front of 38,008 sold-out spectators, defensive coordinator Tyson Veidt's team held Houston to 141 rushing yards and just 92 yards through the air.

Redshirt sophomore Brendan Sorsby had his most efficient passing, completing 12 of 15 passes for 229.3 for 188 yards on a day he completed. He threw touchdowns to Xzavier Henderson in the first half as the Bearcats built a 24-0 lead, then ran for an 8-yard touchdown early in the third quarter. He handed the reins to redshirt junior Brady Lichtenberg in the fourth quarter.

Senior Corey Kiner failed to reach 100 yards for the third straight season, but managed 78 yards and a touchdown run, the longest of his career. Henderson limited his season-high of two catches to two, but scored both touchdowns, a season high. Nathan Hawks made 2 of 2 field goals, making him 4 of 4 for the season.

The win evens the overall series between the schools at 15 and gives the Bearcats a five-game winning streak. UC moves to 3-1 (1-0 Big 12), while Houston falls to 1-3 (0-1 Big 12).

It was Houston's first visit to Nippert since Dec. 4, 2021, when the Dana Holgorsen-led Cougars lost 35-20 to Luke Fickell's Bearcats in the American Athletic Conference title game. The win would send UC to the College Football Playoff semifinals in the Cotton Bowl against Alabama.

Cincinnati Bearcats insights from Week 4 against Houston

Welcome back, Josh Minkins Jr.

After both teams failed on their first possession attempts, Donovan Smith was intercepted by UC safety Josh Minkins Jr. less than three minutes into the game. Minkins missed last week's Victory Bell game against the Miami RedHawks. His interception gave the Bearcats the ball at the Houston 45-yard line and set up the first UC score, a 19-yard pass from Sorsby to Xzavier Henderson.

Minkins played a big role in the second half after he recovered a Houston fumble caused by Tre Gola-Callard, stopping a potential Cougars point-side drive at the 10-yard line.

Corey Kiner to the house

Senior running back Corey Kiner has tried to improve his speed. He has made long runs in recent years but has been unable to finish them. His longest run from the scrimmage line was 68 yards last year, but Saturday's 44-yard run into the end zone was his longest touchdown.

For Xzavier Henderson, the X is the right choice

Henderson scored three touchdowns all of last year, despite leading the team in caught passes with 58. By halftime, Henderson had already scored two touchdowns, matching his 2023 total. He opened the UC scoring list with a 19-yard touchdown catch early in the game in an end zone, then added a second celebration catch in the student section end zone that set the ROTC cannons blazing again in the second quarter.

The Cincinnati Bearcats defense gets the job done against Houston's QB Donovan Smith

With the Bearcats leading 31-0 midway through the third quarter, Houston coach Willie Fritz took veteran starter Smith off the field and replaced him with sophomore Zeon Chriss.

At that point, Smith had completed 11 of 16 passes for just 73 yards and one interception. He had rushed 10 times for 27 yards. Chriss, a former transfer from Louisiana, had not thrown a pass when he entered the game in 2024.

Influence of the Hall of Fame

Among those inducted into the James P. Kelly UC Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday were the late Mike Woods from the 1970s and Mardy Gilyard, who entertained crowds at Nippert Stadium during a few glory years that led to appearances at the Orange and Sugar Bowls. Gilyard received a game ball upon his return.

Satterfield from Cincinnati, Fritz from Houston

Satterfield takes a 2-1 lead in his matchup against Willie Fritz. The previous games took place when Satterfield was at Appalchian State and Fritz was at Georgia Southern.

Fritz previously broke UC's 32-game home winning streak in November 2022 when he led Tulane to a 27-24 victory over Luke Fickell's Bearcats. It was the last game Fickell coached for the Bearcats.

Next up: Another Big 12 opportunity, this time on the road

The Bearcats will play the second of three Texas schools on their schedule when they travel to Lubbock for the first time in 56 years to face Texas Tech. Behind legendary Ring of Honor quarterback Greg Cook, UC and the Red Raiders tied in the 1968 opener. Texas Tech hosted undefeated Arizona State on Saturday afternoon.

The UC-Texas Tech game falls into the 6-day window category, so no game time has been announced as of Saturday. Houston returns home to host Iowa State.
