Houlton police find no threat in photo-sharing investigation

HOULTON – Following an investigation into the alleged distribution of photos involving students, Houlton police announced Thursday that no criminal activity or threats were found.

The investigation began on September 12, when Houlton police, in cooperation with local school officials, investigated reports that photos were circulating among students and individuals in southern Aroostook County.

Witnesses were interviewed and evidence reviewed, and it was discovered that the photos came from a private Google Photos account that was not shared on social media.

Authorities discovered that the photos, which came from public social media platforms such as Facebook, were stored on a private account that only two teenagers had access to.

The investigation revealed that there was neither violent intent nor involvement, nor were any pornographic images involved.

The photos shared by the two people also included unrelated images of pets, family and friends.

Contrary to rumors, the photos have not been assigned to any particular category and are not considered a threat to the public.

Houlton police assure that no crime has been committed and stress the importance of staying away from speculation without any factual basis.

Since minors are involved, detailed information about the case remains confidential in accordance with legal requirements.

The department has communicated with the District Attorney's Office and the results of the investigation are being reviewed by the Aroostook County District Attorney's Office.

Houlton Police are asking anyone with additional information to contact them at 207-532-2287 to help ensure the safety of the community.
