A Perth Amboy man was arrested for stabbing his wife to death in front of their children.

Wellinton Leonardo was charged with murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, Middlesex County District Attorney Yolanda Ciccone announced.

Authorities received a 911 call about a stabbing at a residence on Bertrand Avenue around 2:57 a.m. Saturday. Arriving police found Leonardo and his wife, 40-year-old Rosana Rodriguez, lying on the kitchen floor, according to the district attorney.

Rodriguez, who had been stabbed, was taken to Hackensack Meridian Hospital Raritan Bay Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead, the prosecutor said, and Leonardo was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for treatment.

Anyone with information or surveillance footage from the area is asked to call Detective Danny Hernandez of the Perth Amboy Police Department at 732-324-3805 or Detective Michelle Coppola of the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office at 732-745-3477.
