Tarantino meets Coens & Sam Raimi: Trailer for the neo-noir thriller “The Last Stop In Yuma County” – from the future “Evil Dead” director – Cinema News

“The Last Stop In Yuma County” is the feature film directorial debut of Francis Galluppi, born in Los Angeles in 1988. Not only is it an apparently very entertaining crime thriller, which also thrilled the local audience at the Fantasy Filmfest White Nights in January 2024. The film is also the reason why Galluppi, who also works as a screenwriter and chief editor, was commissioned by “Evil Dead” mastermind Sam Raimi to realize one of the announced sequels to his horror franchise:

Raimi liked the neo-noir, which was permeated with black humor and incorporated Western elements from the early 1970s. Quentin Tarantino's “Pulp Fiction” and “The Hateful 8” as well as “Blood Simple” and “Fargo” by the Coen brothers are also clearly identifiable as sources of inspiration. A certain similarity to Raimi's own “A Simple Plan” is also hard to deny. Good old Sam is by no means the only one who is enthusiastic about Galluppi's work. The review collection site Rotten Tomatoes currently lists 73 professional reviews (as of September 21, 2024), of which a fabulous 96 percent are positive.

The crime story, populated by wonderfully idiosyncratic characters, is embodied by an ensemble cast, led by Jim Cummings from the great “Thunder Road”, Jocelin Donahue (“Doctor Sleep”), Richard Brake (“Barbarian”) and comedian Faizon Love (“Life as We Know It”).

Other important roles are played by Michael Abbott Jr. (“Killers Of The Flower Moon”), Nicholas Logan (“The Inspection”), Sam Huntington (“Superman Returns”), Sierra McCormick (“American Horror Stories”), Robin Bartlett (“The Fables”), Gene Jones (“The Hateful 8”) and 1980s scream queen Barbara Crampton (“Re-Animator”), among others.

“The Last Stop In Yuma County”: This is the story

A knife salesman (Cummings) is running out of fuel in the middle of the Arizona desert. Luckily, he manages to get to the only gas station for miles around. However, the manager (Love) annoys him because he himself is still waiting for a gas delivery. The traveling salesman then decides to stop off at the diner belonging to the truck stop, where he is initially alone with the waitress Charlotte (Donahue).

Shortly afterwards, Beau (Brake) and Travis (Logan) crash into the place, also needing gas. It quickly turns out that they are bank robbers on the run. When the duo realize that their waitress is married to the local sheriff (Abbott Jr.), they pull out their weapons. But the gangsters can't just kill their victims, because more and more guests and even a deputy (Connor Paolo, “Gossip Girl”) arrive, waiting for the tanker truck or just drinking a coffee…
