After a rear-end collision on the A9 near Halle, two cars caught fire. The damage is enormous and the motorway was closed for hours.

Halle (Saale) – A 73-year-old driver was able to drive on Friday afternoon A9 at Halle, they were unable to brake in time. What happened next brought the entire line of traffic to a standstill for several hours.

The Opel driver was driving in the left lane of the A9 towards Berlin at around 3:40 p.m., police said on Saturday.

When the cars in front of him had to brake hard due to traffic between the Kapellenberg car park and the Halle junction, the man did not notice this in time.

He drove into the Audi in front of him (driver: 55) and, due to the force of the impact, pushed it into the Ford of a 48-year-old driving ahead of him.

Opel and Audi then caught fire and burned out completely on the highway.

The reason for this was the severe damage the fire had caused in the left and middle lanes.

“Due to the severe damage, the left lane will probably remain closed for several days as the road surface needs to be professionally restored,” said police spokeswoman Susanne Lübcke.

In total, the material damage to the road and the cars amounts to about 160,000 euros.

The 73-year-old driver who caused the accident and the 55-year-old driver in front of him were injured and had to be taken to hospital for outpatient treatment.
