Details of funeral of Irishman found dead in Portuguese prison cell after alleged attack confirmed

Details have been confirmed of the funeral of an Irish man who was found dead in a Portuguese prison cell earlier this month after allegedly attacking his partner.

Letterkenny native Ryan Chan was found dead in his cell on September 11 after being arrested the previous night in connection with an attack on his partner.

It is believed that the couple visited the country for a wedding.

The victim of the knife attack, a woman in her twenties, was treated for her injuries in hospital and subsequently released.

The Portuguese military police, the National Republican Guard, said an investigation was underway to clarify the circumstances of Mr Chan's death.

The young man's remains have now been repatriated to Ireland by the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust ahead of his funeral on Monday morning.

The 29-year-old restaurant worker leaves behind his partner Megan, his children Ezra and Eli, his mother Frances, his father Bobby and his brother Connor.

Details of Mr Chan's funeral were confirmed on rip.ie: “Ryan Chan of Letterkenny passed away on September 11, 2024. He will be sadly missed by his loving partner Megan and their children Ezra and Eli, his mother Frances, his father Bobby and his wife Yvonne, his brother Connor, his grandmothers, aunts, uncles, cousins ​​and a wide circle of family, friends and neighbours.”

The Donegal native will lie in state at his mother's home in Kiltoy Court today, September 21, between 4pm and 10pm and tomorrow, September 22, between 12pm and 10pm.

His funeral will take place on Monday 23 September 2024 at 11am at the Church of the Irish Martyrs, Ballyraine, Letterkenny.

Mr Chan's obituary confirmed: “Ryan's remains will lie in state at his mother Frances' home at 4 Kiltoy Court, Letterkenny on Saturday 21st September from 4pm to 10pm and on Sunday 22nd September from 12pm to 10pm. The Rosary will be recited at 9pm on both evenings.”

“The funeral will take place from there on Monday, September 23rd, at 10.15am, with the funeral procession then proceeding to the Church of the Irish Martyrs, Ballyraine, Letterkenny, for a requiem mass at 11am.”
