Panchayat head shot dead in Bihar's Samastipur, accused arrested

Samastipur, Bihar: The chairman of a panchayat in Samastipur district of Bihar was shot dead in Halai area, police said on Saturday.

The attacker has been arrested and investigations are ongoing, it was said.

The deceased was identified as Narayan Sharma, the mukhiya of Banviro Panchayat in Samastipur.

“Around 9 pm on Friday, the police received a call about the incident. The accused fled from the scene. A police team immediately reached the spot and rushed Sharma to the nearest government hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries,” said SP Ashok Mishra. PTI.

“A case was registered and the accused was arrested after a manhunt,” he said.

Meanwhile, angry villagers blocked the Samastipur-Patna state highway in protest against the killing, while markets in Halai area remained closed on Saturday.

“The blockade has now been lifted and traffic is back to normal,” Mishra added.
