Veteran CPI(M) politician MM Lawrence, who was among the leaders involved in the attack on a police station in Edappally during the communist insurgency in Kerala in 1950, has died, party sources said.

He was 95 years old. He died in a private hospital where he had been treated for age-related ailments for about a month.

Lawrence is a former member of the Lok Sabha representing Idukki constituency. He has held various positions including member of the Central Committee of the CPI(M), member of the State Secretariat, State General Secretary of CITU and Chairman of the Left Democratic Front (LDF).

Lawrence was born on June 15, 1929 in Mulavukad near Ernakulam and took part in the struggle for the country's independence.

Lawrance was expelled from St. Albert's School because he arrived with a tricolor flag in his pocket.

He continued his studies at the Ernakulam Municipal Islamic School.

He completed his school education after the 10th grade and was actively involved in politics.

Lawrance joined the Communist Party in 1946.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed his condolences on his death.
