West Ham vs Chelsea Predictions

Last season's Premier League matches between West Ham and Chelsea were exciting affairs and the London rivals are likely to provide another entertaining encounter this weekend.

The Hammers beat the Blues 3-1 at the London Stadium in the opening weeks of the 2023/24 season, with Enzo Fernandez missing a first-half penalty for Chelsea and hosts centre-back Nayef Aguerd being sent off with more than 20 minutes left.

West Ham's memories of the return leg are less positive, as they lost 5-0 at Stamford Bridge in May, while Chelsea finished the season strongly under Mauricio Pochettino.

They won six of their last seven home league games last season, but Pochettino's successor Enzo Maresca will be aiming for a third consecutive away win when he leads his team from west to east London.

Chelsea beat Wolves 6-2 at Molineux before winning 1-0 at Bournemouth last weekend, with substitute Christopher Nkunku securing the points with an 86th-minute goal.

This was Chelsea's first away clean sheet in the Premier League since the first week of October 2023, when they won 2-0 at Fulham, but it was far from a defensive masterpiece.

Bournemouth missed a penalty, hit the woodwork through Marcus Tavernier and Ryan Christie and had a further six shots on goal, which should encourage West Ham's talented attackers.

Last season's stars Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus and Lucas Paqueta are joined by winger Crysencio Summerville and former Borussia Dortmund striker Niclas Fullkrug, who hit the post in the Champions League final in June.

Reliable midfielder Tomas Soucek also posed a major threat in attack, although Erling Haaland's hat-trick for Manchester City in their last home game exposed the weaknesses of West Ham's defense.

Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson can't match Haaland's ruthless finishing power, but he can unsettle the opposition defence and is a likely candidate for the first goal.

Both of Jackson's league goals this season have been first goals of the game, when he scored in the second minute against Wolves and in the 25th minute at home to Crystal Palace.

The Senegalese international has an impressive record of 16 goals in 35 appearances for Chelsea and the odds of the visitors scoring a penalty are also attractive.

Since Fernandez's miss in this game last season, the Blues have converted all 11 Premier League penalties awarded to them and their pacy wingers are capable of challenging defenders into hasty challenges.

First-choice penalty taker Cole Palmer is a top-notch player from 12 metres and Nkunku converted penalties in both of his Conference League play-off matches against Servette this season.

Important statistics

No Premier League team was awarded more penalties last season than Chelsea (12).

The participation of full-back Emerson and striker Niclas Fullkrug is questionable. Michail Antonio could be dropped from the starting eleven and Jarrod Bowen would move to the centre-forward position.

Chelsea
Reece James and Malo Gusto remain out and Romeo Lavia is doubtful. Enzo Fernandez and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall are fit again after missing the win at Bournemouth.
