Cat missing in Yellowstone: 1,000 miles back to her owners' home

A fearless cat who ran away from his owners in Yellowstone National Park miraculously made the 1,000-mile journey back to his California home two months after he went missing.

Benny and Susanne Anguiano were on a camping trip earlier this year with their beloved pet cat Rayne Beau when the cat got scared and scurried into the bushes, the Salinas couple told KSBW.

The couple said they spent the rest of their trip searching the woods of Yellowstone for him, laying out his favorite treats and toys in hopes of luring him back.

But after there was no trace of the cat for days, they gave up on it.

“We had to leave without him,” Susanne told the local broadcaster. “That was the worst day because I felt like I was letting him down.”

Sixty days later, back in Salinas, the Anguianos received a notification from Pet Watch with Rayne Beau's microchip ID and location.

Her cat somehow ended up at the local SPCA in Roseville, California – about 200 miles northeast of Salinas.

As the couple learned, a local woman found him alone on the street, realized he was someone's pet, and surrendered him.

They have no idea how he made it the 800 miles from Yellowstone to Roseville.

When they finally got back together with Rayne Beau, he wasn't in the best shape.

“He was really exhausted,” Susanne said. “He probably didn't have enough strength to even go on.”

They hope that someone who may have met Rayne Beau on his long journey home will hear their story and contact him for clues as to how he made it back to California.

“Like, 'We saw it here, we saw it there,' or even 'They took it,'” Benny said.

Aside from the whole “kitten” vibe, Susanna urged all pet owners to microchip their animals.

“If that hadn’t happened, we would never have gotten him back,” she said.
