Meryl Streep just made a huge mistake that will likely infuriate Donald Trump supporters as the US presidential election approaches.

With President Joe Biden stepping down as Democratic nominee for the 2024 election, his Vice President Kamala Harris has taken the reins to face former President – and felon – Trump in a race to the finish line on Tuesday, November 5.

Harris toured the country as part of her election campaign and yesterday (September 19) none other than 75-year-old “Mamma Mia!” actress Meryl joined the discussion virtually.

At the Unite for America event in Michigan hosted by Oprah Winfrey, which was beamed into a room full of Democrats, Meryl had not even said two sentences when she made a huge political blunder and put her hands over her mouth in horror.

“Oh man, it was overwhelming to have the privilege of being here and listening to people's testimony,” began the star of “The Devil Wears Prada.”

The Oscar winner greeted Harris and continued: “Hello President Harris.”

When Meryl realized her mistake, she slapped her hand over her mouth with a hilarious “Oops!” as Harris giggled and the Michigan crowd cheered and clapped.

“47 days,” Harris said. “47 days.”

Meryl continued, “From my mouth into God's ear, and hello Oprah. I think the word of the day could have been prevented. Preventable. All of that. The environment of hate and vitriol and toxicity and encouraging some parts of Americans to hate other parts of Americans, and nobody wants that. I'm sick of it.

“I wanted to ask you – I can't believe I have this chance, I'll probably never have it again – if I'm having a little depressing moment, because actually I think you're going to win. I'm sure you're going to win. But what happens if you win and he doesn't accept it?”

“They know there's going to be this long, arduous process. How do we get to that point, how do we maintain certification on January 6? Because if it doesn't happen, it might go back to the state legislatures.”

“I've been working with the State Government Citizens Campaign. They do the unglamorous work of promoting these candidates. I'm worried about that. I wonder if we're ready for January 6th, and then what happens?”

Harris responded that she believed the majority of Americans who had previously voted for Trump felt the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6 was “a step too far” and thanked the actress for her attendance.

She continued: “When we think about what January 6th was – when the President of the United States sat in the Oval Office and incited a violent mob to attack the United States Capitol, leaving 140 law enforcement officers injured and some killed, in an attempt to overturn a free and fair election as the American people cast their votes – that went too far.

“Unfortunately, we have now seen how far he could go, and I believe that the vast majority of Americans have no tolerance for that.”

Elsewhere at the event, Notting Hill actress Julia Roberts – who said she has had the pleasure of knowing Harris for a long time – said: “I'm a mother of two children. This is their first chance to vote in an election and I couldn't be more excited that they have the legacy of being able to say their first vote will be for you. I get goosebumps saying that.”

“It's interesting, we talk about being Americans united for something. But this has become a global representation of our country and what we stand for.”

“I travel abroad a lot and I want people to say, 'Oh, you're American,' not, 'Oh, how are things over there?'”

Bryan Cranston of “Breaking Bad” also said he was “grinning from ear to ear” at the event.

“I haven’t felt this much joy and optimism in a campaign for a long time,” he said.

“I am so grateful to Kamala for bringing back that optimism and quelling the cynicism and vitriol that is everywhere in Washington.”

“I hope we come to Washington on that wave. I'm here to support her. I couldn't be happier with this campaign. I think she's going to be a great president.”

Introducing comedian Chris Rock, Oprah recalled the last time they spoke about the election and revealed that he said, “There will be crying in the streets. There will be crying in the streets when Kamala Harris becomes president of the United States of America.”

Amid loud cheers, Chris said on the video call: “I've always been a fan of Kamala. I remember writing her a check when she was – I think she was district attorney – maybe it was to get out of a parking ticket or something.”

“But I've been writing her checks for a long time and I want to bring my daughters to the White House to meet this black president.”

“This is the reason [I’m here]”I think she would be a great president, and I'm ready to close this chapter, man. All the hate and negativity has got to stop.”

Zoolander comedian Ben Stiller also took the virtual stage and said the mood in the country had shifted from “Stop Trump mode” to “Go Kamala mode.”

He added: “I have a 22-year-old daughter and a 19-year-old son who will be voting for the first time. For my daughter, reproductive rights are incredibly important.”

Earlier, a debate between Harris and Trump took place, during which Harris extensively attacked the abortion quota cap and spoke passionately about women being denied emergency care and incest victims being denied the opportunity to have an abortion.

Three Trump-appointed justices were part of the majority of decision-makers on nationwide bans that have proliferated since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down federal abortion rights in 2022.

Harris also claimed that Trump would support a nationwide ban. He stressed that this was untrue, but declined to say explicitly that he would veto such a bill.

During the debate, Trump also made some wild and completely untrue claims.

Trump falsely claimed that Harris and the Democrats supported infanticide, which is illegal in all states.

Trump also provided perhaps the most memorable moment of the evening when he spoke about immigrants in Springfield.

He falsely claimed: “The people who came here are eating the cats! They are eating the pets of the people who live there.”
