The South African government reported on its official website in December 2023 that the Gauteng provincial government had requested the Minister of Justice and Corrections in June 2023 to appoint the Crime Prevention Officers as peace officers as provided for in section 334 of the Criminal Procedure Act 1977.

Following a thorough analysis of the existing legal framework, it was determined that in order to be granted the powers of peace officers, Gauteng Crime Prevention Officers must have the same legal status as Gauteng Provincial Traffic Police Officers.

Is the job of a criminal investigator a permanent position?

The training lasts three months and candidates are trained at the SA Army Engineer Formation base at Dunnottar in Gauteng's East Rand and in 3 SA Infantry (SAI) Battalion, Kimberley's specialised infantry training unit.
