The Supreme Court on Friday adjourned for two weeks a plea by the Karnataka government seeking cancellation of the interim bail of Bhavani Revanna, the mother of suspended JD(S) leader and rape accused Prajwal Revanna in a kidnapping case in which one of the victims was allegedly sexually abused by her son.

A bench comprising justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan asked advocate Balaji Srinivasan, representing Revanna, to file an affidavit detailing the status of the case.

Srinivasan stated that charges had been filed in the case, other accused had been granted bail and Bhavani Revanna had cooperated with the investigation.

The court said it would not go into the matter in detail and asked Srinivasan to file an affidavit.

The court then adjourned the case for two weeks.

On July 10, the Supreme Court refused to cancel the interim bail granted to Bhavani Revanna in the case and invited her response on the appeal filed by the Karnataka government against the Karnataka High Court's decision.

The Supreme Court had granted interim bail to Bhavani Revanna on June 18, while stressing that she had already answered 85 questions during the investigation and, therefore, the allegation that she had not cooperated with the SIT in the investigation into her son's sexual abuse cases was unfounded.

The SIT had demanded custody of a domestic help in connection with the abduction of her in KR Nagar in Mysuru district after she failed to appear for questioning.

While granting Bhavani Revanna's interim bail plea, the Supreme Court urged avoiding media trials and stressed the importance of avoiding unnecessary arrests of women as they play a central role in the family.

The Supreme Court also stressed that the allegations of non-cooperation were not convincing as Bhavani Revanna had already given detailed answers during her questioning. The court rejected the SIT's argument that she had given misleading answers.

On June 7, the court granted interim bail to Bhavani Revanna on the condition that she be restrained from entering Mysuru and Hassan districts. The bail was later extended on June 14.

The court had allowed the SIT to take them to Hassan and Mysuru districts for investigation.

Bhavani Revanna is accused of trying to prevent the victim, who was allegedly sexually abused by her son, from filing a complaint.

Prajwal Revanna is currently in SIT custody for allegedly sexually assaulting several women and videotaping the assaults.

The sexual abuse cases came to light after USB sticks containing explicit videos allegedly featuring Prajwal Revanna were reportedly circulated in Hassan ahead of the April 26 Lok Sabha elections.

SIT officials arrested Prajwal Revanna soon after he landed at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport from Germany on May 31. He had left for Germany on April 27, a day after Hassan went to vote.

Previously, INTERPOL had issued a “Blue Corner Notice” through the Central Bureau of Investigation, at the request of the SIT, requesting information on his whereabouts.
