One person was killed and another injured in a fatal stabbing incident near the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam on Thursday evening.

The first person was attacked in the parking lot under the bridge, the second person, who died from his injuries, was attacked outside.

Eyewitnesses told police the suspect shouted “Allah akbar” as he stabbed the second victim, but this was not confirmed. They also said the man appeared determined to attack more people.

A personal trainer giving a class under the bridge described the chaotic scenes as the suspect tried to get into a nearby cafe.

“I saw him stabbing a young lad with two long knives… and I ran at him with a stick that I use for teaching,” Reniël said. “I broke it in two and started running and shouting at him,” he said. “People kept him away from the cafe with chairs and I managed to hit him a few times.”

The Rotterdam police are asking further witnesses to come forward.
