Oscar hopeful new & exclusive on Netflix today: This star-studded drama has 99% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes – Cinema News

“Marriage Story,” “Mank,” and “Roma” have already brought Netflix one or two Oscars. With the star-studded drama “Three Daughters,” which is now available on the streaming service, Netflix is hoping for the next golden boys.

For several years now, Netflix films have not only been regularly featured in the nominations, but also in the winners lists of the Academy Awards. Jane Campion won the Oscar in the Best Director category for “The Power Of The Dog” and Alfonso Cuaron for “Roma,” among others. Laura Dern also won an Oscar for Netflix – for Best Supporting Actress in “Marriage Story.”

What the streaming service with the big red N in its logo is still missing is the golden boy for the best film. Hopes are now being raised with the star-studded drama “Three daughters“, which can be streamed exclusively with a Netflix subscription starting today.

Whether this will ultimately succeed remains to be seen. The Oscar nominations will be announced on January 17, 2025, before the coveted awards are presented as usual on March 2, 2025 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. A look at the English-language review collection site underlines the fact that Netflix can certainly count on its chances with “Three Daughters”. Rotten tomatoes: Here, the proportion of positive reviews is a phenomenal 99%!

This is “Three Daughters”

The drama, written and directed by Azazel Jacobs, centers on three estranged sisters (played by Elizabeth Olsen, Natasha Lyonne and Carrie Coon). When they want to keep their terminally ill father (Jay O. Sanders) company in his final days in his small New York apartment, the women are forced to pull themselves together again. In the past, their distinct, sometimes extremely contrasting personalities have caused many problems and deep hurt.

Katie (Coon) is the oldest of the group and a control freak who is always on edge and is increasingly overwhelmed with raising her teenage daughter. Christina (Olsen) is also a mother and is separated from her small child for several hours for the first time. The two are united by their resentment towards Rachel (Lyonne), who has not yet moved out of her father's house and would prefer to simply ignore the whole situation. The next few days will be an emotional test for the trio…
