“My beloved mother Susie died 26 years ago today”: With these words, Sarah Ferguson, 64, remembered Susan Barrantes on Thursday, September 19, 2024. The grandmother of Princess Eugenie, 34, and Princess Beatrice, 36, died in a tragic car accident in 1998 at the age of just 61. The granddaughters of the late Queen Elizabeth, †96, miss their “Grannie” to this day.

Sarah Ferguson lost her mother in a “cruel accident”

Sarah Ferguson remembers her mother Susan with five pictures from happier days. The first picture shows Fergie on her wedding day on July 23, 1986. Susan Barrantes wore a bright yellow suit. Two years later, she was dead.

Sarah recalled: “My beloved mum Susie died 26 years ago today. She was far too young to be taken from us and I often reflect that at just 61 she was younger than I am now when she died in a gruesome accident. I think constantly of her zest for life and her bright spirit. Like all of us she made mistakes but she taught me to appreciate each day and to always try to treat people with kindness.”

Princess Eugenie reposts her mother's Instagram post in her story with the touching words: “Missing my beautiful grandmother Susie.”

Susan Barrantes was beheaded in a car accident

The documentary filmmaker Susan Barrantes had two daughters, Sarah and Jane, with her first husband, Ronald Ferguson, †71. In 1974, the couple divorced and Susan left the family for the Argentine polo player Hector Barrantes, †51, whom she married in 1975. From then on, she lived in Barrantes in Argentina.

On September 19, 1998, a gruesome car accident occurred that cost her her life. When Fergie's mother noticed herself on the way back from lunch with friends and wanted to drive to her country house, it happened: her SUV collided with an oncoming pickup truck. Susan was decapitated, while Star was still at the scene of the accident, reported “The Irish Times” among others. The drama took place on a country road 520 kilometers west of Buenos Aires.

“We can assume that the head-on collision was caused by glare from headlights or by the distraction of one of the drivers who crossed into the oncoming lane,” said the police spokesman at the time. The accident still has an impact today. Year after year, Sarah Ferguson, her sister Jane and their daughters Eugenie and Beatrice remember their “Grannie”.
