Panic after the Champions League match in Munich: A subway full of fans suddenly comes to a halt. A passenger speaks of “panic” and chaotic scenes.

Update, 9.12 am: Dramatic scenes on Wednesday night (September 18): The subway train on line 6 was apparently on its way from the Allianz Arena to the city center. After Bayern's Champions League match against Dinamo Zagreb, Croatian media reported that hundreds of fans were in the carriages when the train suddenly came to a halt.

As a reader tells our editorial team, during the subway incident last night (see initial report) chaotic scenes played out: According to him, there was panic, the air was so bad that one could “hardly breathe”. He was also happy “to have come out of there safe and sound”. And this is what happened: The train stopped about 100 meters from Freimann station, and the train remained on the open track for a full 30 minutes.

“Luckily, someone managed to open a door to get some air,” said the reader, who was travelling with his son. The door was apparently broken, however, so the driver closed it again and turned the train off. “For what felt like five minutes, no air came in at all and it was totally critical.” “I pressed the SOS button and no one responded,” continued the father. Nevertheless, passengers had to get the door open again and began to jump outside. Many fans then went over a wall into the residential area, some then took taxis home.

This meant that the train could not continue because the subway driver could not ensure whether there were people on the tracks. For safety reasons, the traction current was switched off in the entire track area. Several police patrols and firefighters were called to the scene to clarify the situation. Several people were found in the track area and were then escorted south to the Studentenstadt subway station. According to current information, no one was injured during the operation.

Rail traffic had to be closed for about 1.5 hours, which led to minor disruptions to traffic. The Munich police have begun investigations, including into the misuse of emergency facilities.
