Unaffiliated US movement rejects support for Kamala Harris, citing Gaza policy concerns

WASHINGTON

The Uncommitted National Movement, an organization that mobilizes “undecided” votes in the primaries in protest against the Biden administration’s policies in the Gaza Strip, announced Thursday that it would not support Vice President Kamala Harris as a presidential candidate.

“Vice President Harris's unwillingness to back down from her no-holds-barred gun policy or even make a clear campaign statement in favor of upholding existing U.S. and international human rights laws has made it impossible for us to support her,” the group said in a statement.

She stated that she was against a Donald Trump presidency and did not recommend voting for a third party in the presidential election.

“We urge undecided voters to cast their vote against Trump and vote for him. Our focus remains on building a broad anti-war coalition inside and outside the Democratic Party,” it added.

The announcement came as Harris prepares to visit the state of Michigan and appear at a campaign event alongside Oprah Winfrey.

The Uncommitted Movement encourages Democratic voters to mark “uncommitted” on their ballots in state primaries to express their disapproval of the Biden-Harris administration’s Gaza policy.

According to the campaign, 800,000 voters nationwide cast their votes “undecided.”

More than 100,000 Democratic voters in Michigan cast “undecided” votes in the February presidential primary after the campaign urged voters to protest the Gaza policies of President Joe Biden, who was seeking re-election.

Michigan is a crucial swing state, home to more than 300,000 people with Middle Eastern and North African roots, or about 3.1 percent of the state's population.

In 2020, Biden defeated Trump in Michigan by just over 150,000 votes, a stark contrast to 2016, when Trump defeated Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton by less than 11,000 votes.
