Police: Argument led to shooting that killed 7-year-old Providence girl

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Another arrest has been made in connection with the senseless death of seven-year-old Ny'eil Pires in Providence last month.

Her father, Nelson Pires, was arrested on Wednesday for child endangerment and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

Pires is charged with two counts of child endangerment and driving without a license.

According to police, Pires got into an argument with two other people on August 29, which led to the shooting that killed his daughter.

The two men, Ahmari Cabrera and Shaheem Nathaniel, are accused of intentionally acting against the will of the victims, of physical assault and of committing numerous weapons offenses.

Cabrera is also due in court this morning to hear about bail.

During Wednesday's press conference, Chief Oscar Perez explained that due to the ongoing investigation, not many concrete details about the case could be released.

However, he reiterated the department's commitment to protecting the lives of innocent children and said Pires' actions went beyond poor judgment.

Mayor Brett Smiley also spoke during the press conference on Wednesday:

This crime has shocked our entire city, it has shocked me, it is the first case in several years in which a child has been injured in this way here in our city.

Pires has numerous previous convictions, including several burglary offenses and cases of driving without a license.

He is scheduled to be arraigned in Providence District Court on Thursday morning.
