The Serbian government has decided to make May 3 and 4 a day of remembrance for the victims of mass murder

This decision was taken at the suggestion of the Ministry of Education and on the initiative of the Serbian Society of Victimology, supported by the Working Group for the Establishment of a Memorial Centre in Memory of the Victims of the Mass Murder at the Vladislav Ribnikar Elementary School.

The decision to declare 3 and 4 May as a day of remembrance for the victims of the mass murders promotes the development of a culture of remembrance for the victims and sends a clear message that the victims must not be forgotten and that such tragic events must not be repeated.

Various activities would help raise awareness among the public, especially young people, on how to prevent such tragic events in the future. From the 2024/2025 school year, the Ministry of Education has established in the regulations on the calendar of educational work of primary and secondary schools the observance of the Week of Remembrance and Community in order to promote a culture of remembrance and to honour the innocent victims – students and young people – through examples of good practices implemented during the school year, as well as to develop and promote humanity, empathy, tolerance, respect and dialogue.
