Saoirse Ronan hunts for her missing son during World War II

In the trailer for Steve McQueen's “The Last Man,” Saoirse Ronan plays a desperate mother searching for her missing son in East London during World War II. flash, which fell on Thursday.

The drama follows 9-year-old George, played by Elliot Heffernan, in war-torn London after his mother Rita (Ronan) sends him as an evacuee to the safety of the English countryside. But defiant and determined to return to his mother and grandfather Gerald (Paul Weller) in East London alone, George finds himself in real danger as a desperate Rita tries to find her son, who is in growing danger.

“Why can't you tell me where my boy is?” Rita pleads with the London police at one point in the trailer. Meanwhile, George and other Londoners are seen seeking shelter in subway stations or bombed-out buildings as German Luftwaffe planes continue to bomb the east of the British capital.

Apple's original film is set against the backdrop of the infamous German “Blitzkrieg” bombing of London and was written and directed by McQueen.

The 12 years slave Director said earlier of his latest work when the film was presented at the opening of the London Film Festival: “flash is a film about Londoners. It celebrates the spirit of what and how Londoners endured during the Blitz, but also explores the true portrayal of the people of London, focusing on the story of a working class family desperately trying to be reunited in wartime.”

McQueen and his wife, Dutch director Bianca Stigter, recently worked together on Occupied citya documentary that takes a provocative look at Amsterdam during World War II and under Nazi occupation.

The ensemble cast for flash The cast includes musician Paul Weller, who makes his acting debut, as well as Harris Dickinson, Benjamin Clementine, Kathy Burke, Stephen Graham, Leigh Gill, Mica Ricketts, CJ Beckford, Alex Jennings, Joshua McGuire, Hayley Squires, Erin Kellyman and Sally Messham.

McQueen's Lammas Park banner produced the film along with Working Title Films and New Regency. Producers include Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, McQueen, Anita Overland, Adam Somner, Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer. Executive producers are Anna Smith Tenser, Natalie Lehmann, Sheeraz Shah and Sarah-Jane Wright.

flash brings McQueen back together with 12 years slave Production designer Adam Stockhausen was responsible for the look of bombed-out London, while other creative collaborators included composer Hans Zimmer, costume designer Jacqueline Durran, cinematographer Yorick Le Saux and make-up artist Naomi Donne.

The film, which is set to have its world premiere at the London Film Festival, will be released in theaters on November 1 and streamed on Apple TV+ from November 22.
