Did Sandip Ghosh take orders from ‘someone’ over the phone? CBI suspects external interference in Kolkata rape case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the investigation into the Kolkata doctor's rape case on August 14 following a direction from the Calcutta High Court, suspects that former RG Kar director Sandip Ghosh may have taken “orders” from “someone else” over the phone, a Times of India report said. The investigation agency, which has analysed the details of his call, says Sandip Ghosh spoke to Tala police station officer-in-charge Abhijit Mondal and hospital officials before arriving at the scene.

The CBI officials have said that Sandip Ghosh remained “deliberately absent” from the crime scene instead of closely observing the happenings and taking necessary steps to secure and register the FIR as soon as possible. In fact, Sandip Ghosh reached RG Kar Hospital only after the police.

The CBI will confirm the details of “every single phone conversation” to verify versions and to investigate “the possibility of criminal conspiracy between main and co-accused, if any”, an official said. The agency will show the two the CCTV footage of Tala police station, crime scene and medical college and also examine the mobile data extracted from their phones to “uncover the conspiracy/nexus, if any, and try to hush up the matter”, an official said.

Sandip Ghosh was arrested by the CBI on September 2 for allegedly tampering with evidence in connection with the rape and murder case of 31-year-old RG Kar's junior doctor. Sandip Ghosh was already in CBI custody and was being investigated for financial irregularities in the hospital. The agency is now probing a possible criminal conspiracy between Sanjay Roy (the main accused), Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal Medical Council has cancelled Sandip Ghosh’s registration.

Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal also reportedly rushed the cremation of the doctor despite her family demanding a second autopsy.
