Filming for the sequel to “The Passion of the Christ” is reportedly set to begin in 2025

From the perspective of 20 years later, it can be difficult to understand how powerful Mel Gibson’s The Passion of Christ was in 2004. The film was released in February and then stayed in theaters for more than two months (not to mention its various re-cuts and re-releases). It grossed more than $600 million at the box office and quickly became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. (A title it only lost last summer when Deadpool and Wolverine found at least one way in which they were actually greater than Jesus.) And now it seems to be coming back.

This is per ConsequenceReport on an article that appeared in Italpresswhich states that Gibson is reportedly currently in Malta and is in talks with the Maltese authorities about using the island state as a filming location for a new movie: The Passion of Christ: Resurrectionwith the aim of starting filming in 2025.

Neither Gibson nor star Jim Caviezel, who will return for the sequel, have expressed their ambitions The Passion of Christ 2 made. Gibson first announced the project in 2016, and Caviezel made his own excitement for the return clear in 2018, when he said he expected the film to be “the biggest movie in history.” Gibson even offered a glimpse of plot details in 2022, when he hinted that his script for the film would be less grounded than that of the first film, which drew much of its appeal from a straightforward—if brutally violent—portrayal of Christ's story. “It's like having a little bit of science fiction out there,” Gibson noted of his scripts, saying the film will be set partly “in the past and in other realms.”

Gibson is currently between two films: His latest film, the three-person film with Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Dockery and Topher Grace Flight risk was recently pushed back on the film schedule, from October 2024 to January 2025. After repeatedly ruining his reputation with a series of scandals in the late 2000s and early 2010s, Gibson has slowly The Beaverhas fought his way back to the fringes of Hollywood society in recent years, especially with his Oscar-nominated war film from 2016 Hacksaw Ridge.
