Frazsier's Whip wants to score the first points on Wednesday at the National Stadium against Tigres Femenil

Manchester City's bid to win a second Champions League title got off to a frustrating start as they were held to a goalless draw by Inter in a rematch of the 2023 final.

Both teams wasted numerous chances in a breathtaking back-and-forth match at the Etihad Stadium. Inter defended resolutely but then threatened Pep Guardiola's hosts on several counterattacks.

City striker Erling Haaland had hoped to become the fastest player in history to score 100 goals for a European club, but Yann Sommer saved an early header before firing another effort narrowly wide of the post.

Marcus Thuram fired just over the bar as Simone Inzaghi's side fired a warning shot of their own, while another save from Sommer prevented Phil Foden from capping a superb City move with a goal.

Inter's clearest chance came in the 53rd minute, but former Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian inexplicably attempted to find a teammate with his heel when he had a clear view of Ederson's goal.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan caused a huge sigh of relief among City fans when he missed another golden opportunity in the last minute, firing his shot over the bar from 9 metres out.

But the last chances went to City, and Ilkay Gündogan elicited great cheers from the home fans with two missed shots from close range in the final seconds.

Data debriefing: Inter makes a statement

City are always favourites on their home turf, but Inter were expected to put up a tough fight on Wednesday and that's exactly what they did, establishing themselves as potential challengers for the European crown.

It was only the second time City had failed to score in 42 Champions League home games under Guardiola, the other being a goalless draw against Sporting CP in 2022.

Alessandro Bastoni, Francesco Acerbi and Yann Bisseck impressed in the center of defense and limited Haaland to the fewest ball contacts (14) of all regular players on both teams.

The Nerazzurri were also dangerous in attack: with ten shots on goal in the first half, they were the first Champions League guests since Monaco in February 2017 (also 10) to achieve a double-digit goal rate at the Etihad Stadium.
