New charges filed against Waterford Twp. man for sexually abusing boys

Following new developments in his case, the Oakland County prosecutor filed new charges against a Waterford Township man accused of sexually abusing four boys, officials said Wednesday.

Logan Joseph Sutherland, 21, was charged in 51st District Court on August 30 with four counts of second-degree sexual abuse and two counts of aggravated possession of child sexually abusive material.

Sutherland is now charged with a total of eight serious crimes, including the previous charges as well as another count of aggravated possession of child sexually abusive material and one count of child sexual abuse, the Oakland County District Attorney's Office said in a press release.

Each count of second-degree sexual abuse carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison, lifetime electronic monitoring after release on parole, mandatory testing for AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases, and the submission of DNA samples upon request, the press release said.

Child sexual abuse charges can carry up to 20 years in prison or a fine of up to $100,000. Aggravated possession of child sexual abuse material could also subject Sutherland to up to 10 years in prison or a fine of up to $50,000.

The name of the public defender representing Sutherland was not included in online court records as of Wednesday afternoon.

Sutherland has been granted a probable cause hearing and is scheduled for Oct. 8, according to online court records.

According to online court records, Sutherland has not yet posted bail.

According to police, Sutherland befriended the parents of several boys and gained their trust in order to spend time alone with their children and sexually abuse them.

In all cases, the man sexually abused minors and took explicit photographs of them, which led to the new charges on Tuesday, prosecutors reported.

Police arrested Sutherland on Aug. 27 after a criminal complaint was filed against him in connection with a 10-year-old boy. During the arrest, investigators found still images and videos of naked boys on Sutherland's cellphone, officials said.

Three other victims, ages 7, 11 and 13, came forward after Sutherland's arrest. The victims claim Sutherland attacked them at his home, a Skyzone in Commerce Township, a ZapZone arcade in Waterford and a Sportway go-kart track, authorities said.

In addition to the four victims known to investigators in August, the photos on his cell phone also showed several boys. The public prosecutor's office did not say whether new victim identifications would lead to further charges.

An assistant district attorney is handling the case against Sutherland in the district attorney's special victims' unit, Oakland County District Attorney Karen McDonald said.

“This defendant preyed on vulnerable children and parents,” McDonald said in a statement Wednesday. “I admire the immense courage of the victims who have come forward. Sexual assault cases, particularly of children, are among the most traumatic cases my office handles.”

Authorities are asking survivors and anyone with information about Sutherland's case to contact their local police department.
