An assailant stabbed and injured a student at a Japanese school in southern China on Wednesday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said. It is the second attack of its kind on Japanese educational institutions in the country in recent months.

“A 10-year-old student at a Japanese school in Shenzhen was stabbed to death by a man about 200 meters from the school gate,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian.

The student was immediately taken to hospital and the attacker was arrested on the spot, he said.

A police report from a district in Shenzhen where a Japanese school is located said an attack on a child took place around 8 a.m. The suspected attacker was named Zhong and was 44 years old, it said, but a motive was not given.

The victim's nationality was not mentioned by the Foreign Ministry spokesman or in the police report, but Japanese media reported that the student was a Japanese boy.

“The case is still under investigation. China will continue to take effective measures to protect the safety of all foreigners in the country,” Lin said.

This incident follows a similar one in June, when a man attacked a Japanese school bus in the eastern Chinese city of Suzhou, leaving a Chinese national dead after he tried to protect a Japanese mother and her child from the attacker.

Japan's Deputy Cabinet Secretary Hiroshi Moriya said Tokyo had called on China to prevent another such attack and provide detailed information on the issue.

Japan has also sent officials to the area to provide assistance.

“Japan will continue to work closely with the Chinese authorities and make every effort to ensure the safety of its nationals living abroad,” he said at a press conference.

Wednesday marks the 93rd anniversary of the Mukden Incident, a false flag operation staged by the Japanese military that triggered the invasion of its neighboring country. Historians estimate that around 14 million Chinese died in the ensuing war and another 100 million became refugees.
