Roma sacks Daniele De Rossi after failing to win their first four Serie A games

ROME – Roma sacked coach Daniele De Rossi on Wednesday, a surprise move that came despite the Giallorossi being winless in their first four matches in the Italian league.

De Rossi, a former Roma captain, was hired in January to replace the sacked José Mourinho and impressed so much in the second half of last season that he was given a contract extension until 2026/27 in June.

“The club's decision was taken in the best interests of the team to get back on the desired path as soon as possible, given that the season is still in its early stages,” Roma said. “A big thank you to Daniele, who will always be at home at the Giallorossi club, for the work he has done with passion and dedication in recent months.”

Roma added that “a communication regarding the technical guidance of the team will follow.”

On Sunday, Roma will host Serie A leaders Udinese.

After a goalless draw at Cagliari in their opening match, Roma lost 2-1 at home to Empoli. This was followed by draws at Juventus (0-0) and Genoa (1-1). This leaves Roma in 16th place with just three points.

De Rossi had made Roma a better attacking unit than Mourinho's defensive teams, but he managed only two goals this season.

Next week Roma opens its Europa League season with a match against Athletic Bilbao at the Stadio Olimpico.

Romelu Lukaku's loan deal at Roma ended after last season, but talented striker Paulo Dybala stayed at the club after considering a move to Saudi Arabia.

Roma's American owners, Dan and Ryan Friedkin, have often made surprising decisions.
