Liverpool fan's 'smiling face' is 'missing in the stands' after his death in Italy

Philip Dooley died after travelling to Italy to watch Liverpool FC play AC Milan.

Condolences poured in for Liverpool fan killed in Italy. Philip Joseph Dooley died after being hit by a car on a road in Bergamo, an Italian city northeast of Milan, early on Tuesday morning, September 17.

Merseyside Police said they were assisting authorities in Italy and had informed his next of kin. Two men who witnessed the incident are also assisting Italian police with their investigation.


Philip had travelled to Italy, along with thousands of other Liverpool FC Fans who will attend the club's match against AC Milan at San Siro on Tuesday. Hundreds of tributes have been pouring in for Philip on social media.

Alan Sloan said: “I'll miss your smiling face in the Kop mate. Rest in peace mate, we will miss you. YNWA.” Tracy Hamilton said: “So sad. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Heaven is golden! YNWA.”

Chris Everton Mac said: “Rest in peace boy and my deepest condolences to your family.” JR Lennon said: “Terrible tragedy, my condolences to his family.”

Dawn Kingsbury said: “So sad. [He] went to watch his team,” while Georgie Tennant said: “RIP Phil. Will miss the jokes.” Bernard Wright added: “RIP, from a Man Utd fan. Terrible news.”

Anna Mercer said: “Rest in peace and deepest condolences to the family. Love from a Man Utd fan.” Kendra Sanders added: “Football unites fans, especially in times of tragedy. YNWA.”


Liverpool Football Club also paid tribute on Tuesday, saying: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the tragic death of our fan Philip Dooley following a road traffic accident in Bergamo in the early hours of this morning. Philip was a lifelong Liverpool fan who had travelled to Italy to attend this evening's Champions League match against AC Milan.

“Our staff in Milan are working with local police and the consulate and continue to support other fans affected by this devastating incident. The thoughts and prayers of everyone associated with the club are with Philip's family, friends and fellow fans at this extremely difficult time. Rest in peace, Philip.”

Flowers were laid on fans' seats at the San Siro stadium before kick-off on Tuesday, and Liverpool players wore black armbands in memory of Philip during the game.
