Another boat accident leaves four people dead and 12 hospitalized in Zamfara municipality

Less than a week after a boat capsized in Gummi, killing over 40 people, another boat with over 50 passengers on board capsized in Mashayar Garba Rogo in Bukkuyum town in Bukkuyum Local Government Area of ​​Zamfara State.

A villager, Muhammad Usman, said the boat, carrying over 50 people, capsized on Tuesday, leading to the tragic incident in which four children drowned.

Two bodies have been recovered, two more are still missing. In addition, 12 survivors are currently receiving medical treatment at Bukkuyyum General Hospital.

One of the survivors, Babangida Usman, explained that the boat had over 50 passengers on board, mostly young children and some adults who were crossing the river to get to their farms.

According to him, the boat began to show unusual movements during the trip. Despite the captain's efforts, it eventually capsized.

“We rescued 12 children and some adults. Unfortunately, four people died. We recovered two bodies, but the other two are still missing,” he said.

The Sole Administrator of Bukkuyyum Local Government, Honourable Nasiru Muhammad, confirmed the incident and attributed it to overloading, fear and non-compliance with boating safety guidelines.

“The government is still treating the 12 rescued victims at the Bukkuyum General Hospital and measures are being taken to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.”

He added: “Experts are currently searching the river for the two missing passengers.”
