Liverpool fan killed in tragic traffic tragedy in Italy before match against AC Milan – clubs pay tribute

Final respects have been paid to an Irish Liverpool fan who died in a road accident just hours before his beloved club was due to face AC Milan in the Champions League.

Philip Dooley, 51, an Irish native living in Liverpool, was on his way to Milan to attend the match, which Liverpool won 3-1. In the early hours of Tuesday morning, he was hit by a vehicle on his way to his hotel near Orio al Serio airport, which lies between Seriate and Bergamo in Lombardy.

Liverpool FC paid their final respects to Philip, with representatives from the club and opponents AC Milan laying a wreath on his seat at San Siro before kick-off and issuing a statement saying the club was “deeply saddened by his tragic passing”.

“Philip was a lifelong Liverpool fan who travelled to Italy to attend this evening's Champions League match against AC Milan,” the club said.

“Our staff in Milan are working with local police and the consulate and continue to support other fans affected by this devastating incident.

“The thoughts and prayers of everyone associated with the club are with Philip’s family, friends and fellow fans during this extremely difficult time,” the statement concluded.

Merseyside Police are also assisting with the investigation into his death and said in a statement that two witnesses to the tragic incident are also speaking to Italian police.

Liverpool fans also paid tribute to him. One online post before the game read: “YNWA Philip Dooley. Our condolences to his family. Let's win this game in his honour.”
