Police say a Food Lion employee was found dead in a grocery store freezer

RALEIGH, NC (Gray News) – Last week, a grocery store employee in North Carolina was found dead in a freezer.

According to WNCN, the man was found dead in the freezer of a Food Lion store in Raleigh on September 10.

Police said they were called to the Food Lion after employees found their co-worker dead in the freezer.

The police assume that there was no third-party negligence and that the man's death was a medical emergency.

Raleigh police and OSHA are investigating.

The employee's name has not been made public.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Food Lion said it was “deeply saddened by the unexpected loss of our employee. We extend our deepest condolences to the employee's family and friends.”

Food Lion also stated that it was cooperating with the investigation and described the incident as an “unfortunate incident.”
