Tragedy in Anjin in Mutare: Worker thrown from moving truck

In Chiadzwa, a fatal accident occurred when one of the security guards was thrown out of Anjin Investment's truck during the transport of a new construction project. His colleagues were shocked and saddened.

This was confirmed by the general secretary of the Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Mineral Workers Union, Justice Chinhema, who said the accident occurred on Wednesday last week and resulted in the death of their member, security guard Tafadzwa Makwaya, who worked at Anjin Investments in Chiadzwa, Mutare.

He said the accident involved the company's dump truck, adding that the employee fell out of the moving truck and died on the spot. His body was taken to Victoria Chitepo Hospital by the police.

Chinhema, in a statement, condemned the loss of life, which he said could have been avoided had management listened to the numerous demands of workers and Zdamwu for a change in their transport system.

He said that since Anjin began operations, there have been serious concerns about the safety of workers and especially the equipment used.

“The very mode of transport we had asked management to change caused a tragic accident in which a security guard was killed while travelling with other colleagues to their workplace in an overcrowded dump truck,” said Chinhema.

He said the security guard slipped out of the vehicle and died at the scene, leaving a trail of grief among his colleagues who recently almost refused to go to work until their issues, such as delayed salary payments and safety concerns, were resolved.

Chinhema said the accident occurred around 5pm on Wednesday when security guards were on shift.

Shadreck Shamu, human resources manager at Anjin Investments, declined to comment.
