According to local media, a 12-year-old girl was admitted to Santa Maria Hospital in serious condition with chest and head injuries.

A police official said none of the other victims suffered life-threatening injuries in the attack. The students were taken to Vila Franca de Xira hospital with injuries to their arms and stomach.

According to CM, the knife attack took place in Azambuja Primary School.

The 12-year-old boy was taken into police custody after being arrested by the GNR.

CM reports that due to his age, the boy was not officially arrested but remains in police custody.

It was not immediately clear what had provoked the attack.

Local emergency services, including six ambulances, the Azambuja Fire Department and the National Institute for Medical Emergencies (INEM), quickly arrived at the scene.

According to CNN Portugal, the 12-year-old student is said to have attacked his classmates with a knife from the cafeteria.

He was later detained in a classroom.

The perpetrator is said to be the son of a teacher who teaches at this school.

Azambuja Mayor Silvino Lucio said the student left school to go home for lunch and returned at 2pm wearing a bulletproof vest on his way back.

According to the mayor, the intervention of an employee was crucial in stopping the minor.

Lucio told CNN Portugal: “He entered the school after lunch and started stabbing everyone he saw.”

Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro condemned the isolated incident.

On X (formerly Twitter) he wrote: “I strongly condemn the attack at the school in Azambuja and wish the injured students a full and speedy recovery.”

The Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation issued a statement clarifying that it had already contacted the school's principal “to learn about the situation and will continue to monitor the evolution of the health of the injured students and wish them a full recovery.”

The statement said: “The Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation strongly condemns any act of violence inside or outside a school.”
