Cyberattack: Many dead and 2,750 injured when pagers explode in Lebanon

Across Lebanon, at least eight people were killed and about 2,750 people were seriously injured by exploding portable pagers.

Firass Abiad, the country's health minister, who confirmed the horrific incident on Tuesday, said more than 200 people were currently in critical condition.

He said the communication devices exploded on Tuesday morning, causing chaos in the country and that around 150 hospitals are currently treating the victims.

As DAILY POST learned, Iran's ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, was also one of those injured in the pager explosions.

Reporting from the Lebanese capital Beirut, Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr said it appeared the devices had been hacked and detonated in a coordinated attack.

According to the reporter, the incident represents an “important development” in the hostilities between Israel and the Iranian-backed Lebanese group.

“This is a major security breach. Hezbollah's communications equipment has been compromised. We have seen images from all over Lebanon of men lying injured and bleeding on the ground. We have seen reports of hospitals begging for blood,” she said.
