Dolly Parton and sister Rachel Parton George talk about family and cooking

When asked if she sings in the kitchen, Dolly Parton says it's a “stupid” question.

“It's just part of it,” Parton tells TODAY.com. “I remember Mom always singing when she was cooking, and she was always singing anyway, so we just incorporated that.”

The country legend says the entire Parton family – including all 11 siblings – grew up with a love of singing and continue to harmonize around the stove to this day. A favorite is the 1951 hit “Hey, Good Lookin',” a classic country song by Hank Williams.

“We sang, 'Hey, handsome, what have you been cooking?'” Parton says. “How about we cook something with me?”

On September 17, the ten-time Grammy winner and her sister Rachel Parton George will celebrate the release of their joint cookbook “Good Lookin' Cookin': A Year of Meals.”

Named after their food duets, the book features over 80 recipes, including Country Ham and Biscuits, Barbecue Spareribs, Slaw of Many Colors (get it?), and more, plus tips for hosting holiday gatherings and creating memories similar to this one.

The sisters say food was an important part of their upbringing – some of their fondest memories take place around the dinner table. In fact, some of the recipes they grew up with ended up in the cookbook.

“It was usually chicken and dumplings or fried chicken,” Parton George tells TODAY.com of the meals they ate as children in East Tennessee. “That was always what everyone in the family loved, I remember that.”

“I think there was something special about Sundays and chicken – even in the country,” says Parton, adding that although the dish was not only eaten on Sundays, it was always prepared when the pastor came to visit.

“The preacher in our family happened to be our grandfather, and grandfather loved fried chicken,” Parton says with a laugh. “But he always felt that Sunday was his special day, even though he ate with us at different times.”

Parton’s next business venture is Also a family affair. Along with the release of the cookbook, food delivery service Home Chef will be adding some of the couple's recipes to its menu for a limited time.

The dishes, which come in special packaging inspired by the cookbook, are:

  • Week of September 30th: Roast chicken and gravy with mashed potatoes by Dolly & Rachel
  • Week of September 30th: Family favorite: meatloaf with green beans from the South
  • Week of October 7: Sirloin steak with blue cheese butter, grilled potato wedges and broccoli
  • Week of October 7: Roast trout in the country with purple and white coleslaw
  • Week of October 14: Grilled chicken breast with spicy mayo corn

“I order my own,” says Parton. “We don't have time to cook every day, so this is a wonderful way to enjoy our own food.”

To celebrate the partnership, Home Chef is offering 18 free meals and free shipping to new customers who use the code “GETCOOKIN.”

The meal kit service is also offering a chance to win a $150 gift card and a copy of “Good Lookin' Cookin'.” People can enter the drawing by tagging their favorite cooking partner in the comments on Home Chef's Instagram post from September 18 to October 18.

“I think we just grew up in a family full of love and respect and didn't have anything that money could buy. So we learned to feel rich by the love and understanding and care that we felt in our family,” Parton says of the decades the Partons spent together. “We feel like we were lucky in this world. God was kind to us, very kind.”

“When you have your best friend as a sister, as a best friend, who you cook with and who is there for you – that means everything,” Parton George says. Her sister – who seems touched by the sentiment – adds: “I can only support those feelings.”
